Explorer I: Foundations

What You'll Learn

In Explorer I, we work in small groups so you get personalized attention. Each lesson is designed to be practical, thoughtful, affordable, and immediately useful.

Core Learning Areas:

  1. Solid Foundations in Sleight of Hand We start with the basics, taught the right way. You'll get preparatory drills, step-by-step breakdowns, and practice strategies to build lasting skill. Even if you think you already know these moves, you'll find new insights here.
  2. Tricks That Teach We'll work on routines using the sleights you've learned. Beyond just "how it's done," we cover presentation, psychology, and a proven method for analyzing tricks to spot weaknesses and fix them.
  3. Smart Routining The tricks you learn will fit together into two- or three-trick sets, showing you how intelligent planning can elevate a simple trick into a memorable experience.
  4. Theory in Action Important ideas about the art of magic will be introduced as they naturally connect to what we're learning.
  5. The Reading Advantage We encourage reading because it fuels imagination and critical thinking—both essential for good conjuring. Each week includes short, required reading, plus optional extras.
  6. Interactive, Personal Instruction Classes are small, so you'll have real interaction with your instructor. Questions are encouraged, problems will be addressed, and you'll get direct feedback.

About Your Instructor: Michael Close

Fascinated by magic for 66 years, performing professionally since 1978. Over the decades, Michael has written, created, and taught extensively, working with private students and serving as the magic consultant for Penn & Teller: Fool Us, influencing hundreds of magicians worldwide.

His eBooks on the faro shuffle, palming, false shuffles, and the double lift have become standard references for serious magicians. Teaching through a screen is a skill of its own, and Michael has refined it so you can get crystal-clear instruction no matter where you live.
